Beyond Basic Dog Training

Product Description
Since its initial publication, Beyond has achieved well deserved recognition as an innovative, unique guide to obedience instruction. Obedience authority Diane Bauman’s proven training philosophy asserts that the time has come to go beyond training dogs and start teaching them to please us. This has made a vital difference for those who use her method–and for dogs taught by it to succeed in competitive canine sports.

In this new, updated edition, Bauman presents the most current knowledge on canine learning patterns. Believing that dogs learn by trial and error, Bauman provides a novel approach that encourages dogs to learn by removing corrections for incorrect responses. As a result, dogs do not fear failure and are taught to exercise options in a quest for the desired behavior.

Bauman shows you how to become a “thinking handler” who can train the “thinking dog.” Her remarkable ability to view training from the dog’s perspective translates into an invaluable tool for building effective communication between you and your dog.

The instruction in this authoritative guide is behind Gaines “Superdogs,” numerous obedience trial champions, and a host of other canine successes. If you want your dog to be happy, confident stimulated, and secure in the obedience ring, Beyond Basic Dog Training is the book of choice.

“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” — John 14:15.

Obedience is an aspect of Love. And since love can only exist in a mutual relationship between two beings, obedience exists only in a mutual relationship between you and your dog. Christ commands us to be obedient to his command, not to intimidate us, or to put us in a guilt trip, but to give rise to the love between Christ and Man. And Christ promised, “Ask and you shall receive.” And we will get what we need to thrive in our faith.

We must treat our dogs the same way. We must demand obedience from them. But we must also recognize the demands of obedience upon us. We have to recognize and fulfill the dog’s commands to us. We must provide a loving, caring atmosphere in which he will thrive. As the dog learns how to respond to us, we must understand why he is responding to us as he is. He will make mistakes, and this book correctly tells us to encourage those mistakes. Correction is not applied to honest mistakes, but rather a correct analysis of the dog’s reponse to our command, and an adjustment in the teaching process to obtain the correct response from the dog.

The idea of this book is quite revolutionary. It assumes that the dog thinks about things, and tries to solve problems that are posed to him. And this thinking process is cultivated in the dog. Dogs thrive better when they are taught to obey, rather than trained to obey, as Ms. Baumann would put it. This book challenges us to challenge our dog to achieve the goals of the obedience trials. These goals also include commands which may someday save your dog’s life, such as the emergency “Down,” and emergency “Come” commands. The real beauty of this method is that the puppy’s enthusiam is harnessed to create an enthusiastic, well-trained dog who is confident, and understands clearly what is expected. Confusion, or muddled understanding is not comfortable for the dog, just as it is not comfortable for us.

Would you rather work in a job where all you do is stamp bills “Paid in Full” all day. Or would rather work in a job where new challenges and problems to solve come up on a regular basis. I would rather have the latter job, and I am pretty sure my dog would to. Challenge him to reach new levels of obedience, and strive with him toward that Utility Dog title.

If you love your dog, give him a rewarding existence, and to do that you have to teach him to be obedient, and you have to be obedient to his needs, and provide for his physical, nutritiional, and emotional needs. If you do this, then indeed the dog will become your best friend.

Learn to love your dog, and teach, not train, your dog how to love you.

Bauman’s book is very old-fashioned. Her method involves setting the dog up to fail and then punishing him for doing so, rather than setting him up to succeed and reinforcing the desired behavior. Once, methods like Bauman’s were all we had — “correction” was accepted as the only way to train a dog. But there are SO many better, more positive, more reliable, and more fun (for you and the dog) ways of training now. I see no reason why anyone would stick with this stuff when there’s a better way. Not recommended.

I’m glad I read this book in the library and didn’t purchase it. Much of the “training advice” contained is outdated and downright abusive. Recommendations include painfully pinching the soft part of your dog’s ear between the links of a metal choke-chain and your thumbnail, so that he’ll open his mouth to yelp in pain, at which point you jam a retrieving dumbbell in. If that fails, the author actually recommends that you strangle your dog with the choke-chain, LITERALLY (and I quote) “until he has to open his mouth to gasp for air”, so THEN you can force the object into his mouth as he struggles to breathe. SERIOUSLY??? I am completely baffled as to how ANYONE with a dog could read this entire book and still follow the instructions, let alone give the book a 5-star review. This is not the only way to get a dog to hold something in her mouth. This is not even close to the best way to do it. And, even if it WAS the only way, I don’t think it would be worth it to sadistically exploit my dog’s trust and hurt her like that, just so she’d carry a stupid toy around in her mouth. This type of training is nothing but pointless cruelty. Run away from this book as fast as you can, and find a good CPDT or CAABC in your area, and ask for help with truly humane effective training that focuses mainly on positive reinforcement.

Beyond Basic Dog Training

When then book originally came out it was quite forward thinking in its methodology. Fortunately for our dogs there has been a quiet revolution in dog training to a less coercive method of training. For example, her method of teaching sit involves pulling up on the collar while pushing on the dog. In short physical discomfort is being created for a command that the dog does not even know. Her methods are based on negative reinforcement. The correct response will make the discomfort vanish. This type of training can be effective if you have the right dog for the stress it will produce and if you the handler have great timing and can always perfectly and rapidly make all pressure vanish when the performance is correct.

This book teaches all aspects of competitive dog training using positive methods. Excellent resource guide for both the experienced and or novice trainer. I have given it to my friends as a gift and they were delighted.
